Mao Zedong presented and discussed the basic principles of correctly handling internal contradictions among the people in the speech "On the Proper Handling of Internal Contradictions among the People". That is, in the economic area, insisting balance and realize all-round arrangements; in the ideological and cultural fields, insisting hundred flowers blossom and a hundred schools of thought contend; in the party relations, insisting a long-term coexistence, mutual supervision; and in ethnic relations, up-holding equality, ethnic unity. These guidelines pointed out the direction for the then socialist construction in China.
