Among the novelists of the Victorian age, Thomas Hardy is the master of using literature allusions : biblical allusions, Greek mythologies and even works of other writers can be creatively applied to his own writing. The Return of the Native is Hardy's sixth novel, and it is a spectacular novel for its broad use of allusions and deep arrangement of content. The usage of allusions can not only add read- ing pleasure when the readers recognize their resources, it can also help the reader understand the deep meaning which the writer wants to express.
