A system is described which uses hospital-based minicomputers as well as distributed data processing to provide Prospective, Concurrent and Retrospective Drug Use Review (DUR). Prospectively, orders are automatically compared against the current Patient Medication Profile (PMP) for potential Drug-Drug Interactions as well as Therapeutic and Generic duplicates. Concurrently, a Drug Order Review worksheet can be generated for specific pharmacologic categories or individual drug products. Selected prescription data is transferred to the patient data base which allows for Retrospective DUR. The patient data base may be queried by using standard reports or on an ad hoc basis to look at pharmacotherapy in detail or summary. Several sample reports are described.
