摘要

Application of the tools of graphics, animation, sound and hypertext integrated with expert knowledge may help overcome the difficulties in teaching acid-base metabolism and its disorders. Using the Macintosh computer and the application, Hypercard™ we have developed a program with the following characteristics: 1) An acid-base map, consisting of a nomogram for plasma pH, PCO2 and HCO3 with superimposed zones representing physiological adaptation for each acid-base disorder, is incorporated graphically and mathematically into the program. 2) A differential diagnosis is developed for each of 12 zones on the map and, after obtaining additional user-entered clinical information, the program applies the relevant algorithms and presents the most likely diagnosis and differential diagnosis on screen and in printout. 3) The user may proceed along one or more educational pathways involving text, graphics, speech, and animation which demonstrate and discuss normal physiology, pathophysiology, and diagnostic criteria. The comprehensiveness and flexibility of the program enables use by a broad spectrum of health professionals and students.
