Conventionally, if a sow is crushing her piglet, she is manually motivated to stand (hand-slap; CONV); therefore, ECHO (SwineTech) was invented to automatically motivate standing. ECHO automatically detects a distress-call and stimulates the sow with vibration (VIB). If she does not stand, ECHO emits an electrical impulse (EI). Objective was to compare sow behavior, heart rate (HR), and cortisol responses to VIB (n=17), CONV (3 hand-slaps on loin area; n=18), or EI (VIB+EI; n=21). Sows were treated among 6 sessions relative to farrowing (2 sessions on days 1–2; 1 session on days 3–4 ± 1.4 SD). A distress-squeal of a piglet was played during each session. Two trained observers collected behavior-frequencies during each session (i.e. lie, sit, stand, oral-nasal-facial behaviors, grunt, squeal, bark, bite, jump); a weighted stress-index was calculated from behavior data (STRESS-BEH). Heart rate was automatically collected during each session (H10; Polar USA, Warminster, PA). To measure circadian-cortisol, 2 blood-samples (0600 and 1630 h; ear-venipuncture) were collected on days 1, 4, 5, 7, and 9 relative to farrowing. To measure acute response-cortisol, blood samples were collected before and after the first and last session. Overall, CONV-sows had less ( <0.001) STRESS-BEH than ECHO-sows, and VIB-sows displayed the least STRESS-BEH (VIB=6.5, CONV=28.2, EI=42.0 ± 2.5 %SEM). There were no treatment*time effects for circadian- and acute response-cortisol concentrations ( >0.10). VIB-sows tended ( =0.090) to have the lowest minimum-HR, but CONV- and EI-sows had similar minimum-HR (VIB=88, CONV=99, EI =101 ± 5.8 bpm SEM). Similarly, EI- and CONV-sow HR tended ( =0.071) to take longer to return to pre-treatment measures during lying than VIB-sows (VIB=8.75, CONV=11.4, ECHO=15 ± 2.45 min SEM). EI was the most effective method at motivating sows to stand during distress-calls, but it caused the most stress-related behaviors. However, physiological data suggest that CONV-methods were equally as stressful as ECHO-methods.
