This study investigated the effects of encapsulated cinnamaldehyde (CIN) and citral (CIT) alone or in combination on the gut health and performance of broilers that either received a coccidiosis vaccine or not. The chicken trial had 3,200 male broilers (Cob) with 1,600 vaccinated against coccidiosis, which were randomly allocated to five treatments (4 pens/treatment, 80 birds/pen): negative control (non-medicated feed); feed supplemented with bacitracin, CIN, CIT, or a combination of CIN and CIT. The essential oils (EOs) were applied on d 10–28. On d 21–22, 16 birds/treatment were sacrificed for necropsy and scorings of intestinal lesion due to coccidiosis and of necrotic enteritis lesions due to Body weight (BW), feed intake, average daily gain (ADG), and feed conversion ratio were significantly improved ( < 0.05) in the both bacitracin- and EOs-treated birds. The bursal sizes of the vaccinated birds were larger than those in the non-vaccinated birds, indicating better developed immunity. In birds receiving either bacitracin or CIN, the coccidiosis lesion incidence was 6.25% with an average lesion score of 0.06. No lesions due to were found in the CIN+CIT-treated birds and no lesions due to were observed in each of CIN- and CIT-treated birds. Similarly, tested EOs reduced NE incidence and severity at a level comparable to the effect of bacitracin, particularly when the two oils were combined. The oocyte counts in fecal materials were higher in the vaccinated birds than in the non-vaccinated birds ( < 0.05). The incidence and severity of coccidiosis coincided with the observed oocyte counts. Started on d 28, vaccination appeared to affect the BW and ADG. These results demonstrated that encapsulated EOs at the tested dose were as effective as bacitracin in controlling coccidiosis due to sp. and necrotic enteritis due to in broilers.
