The effects of AC Yellowhead alfalfa (ALF), sainfoin cultivars; AC Mountainview, Nova, Shoshone, Delaney, AC Veldt cicer milkvetch (VELDT), Great Plains Canadian milkvetch (GRT), AC Lamour purple prairie clover and Antelope white prairie clover in binary mixtures with either Tom Russian wildrye (RWR), AC Success hybrid bromegrass (HBG) or Admiral meadow bromegrass on forage yield, quality and compatibility sampled in summer and fall were determined at Swift Current and Saskatoon in a split-plot arrangement of a randomized complete block design (RCBD). All sainfoin cultivars were seeded at 30 pure live seeds (PLS) m-1, while the other species were seeded at 50 PLS m-1 at Swift Current (John Deere 1590 Double Disc Press) and Saskatoon (“Hege” plot seeder) in May 2015 at a depth of 1.9 cm. Forage dry matter yield (DMY) was estimated using a flail plot harvester (0.6 X 5 m area) at Swift Current and 2 0.25 m2 quadrats within each replicate (n=4) plot randomly clipped (2cm stubble height) at Saskatoon in July and September. Data were analyzed as split-plot RCBD with four replications (n=4) using Mixed Model of SAS. Year was included as a random effect, harvest dates as main-plot and binary mixtures as sub-plot. Forage DMY and harvest dates (yr 2) differed (P < 0.0001) at both sites. ALF-HBG (10,491 kg ha-1) (Saskatoon) and VELDT-HBG (5,657 kg ha-1) (Swift Current) produced the highest yield. Crude protein, fibre content (acid and neutral detergent fibres), in-vitro organic matter digestibility, calcium and phosphorus differed (P < 0.0001) among treatments and between harvest dates. ALF-HBG and VELDT-HBG are suggested to be desirable mixtures (DMY), whereas GRT-RWR and VELDT-RWR mixtures ranked high (quality). These results suggest that although yield and compatibility differed in contrasting agro-climatic zones, specific mixtures are suitable for deferred grazing in summer and fall in the Canadian prairies.
