摘要

Six types of coronavirus have been found to be capable of causing human infections [1]. Four of them are not highly pathogenic, typically causing cold symptoms in immunocompetent individuals, while the other two types, the severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) and the Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS), can result in severe respiratory illness and fatalities [2–4]. In late 2019, a novel coronavirus COVID-19, which turns out to be more infectious and can survive higher temperature than SARS [5], has been identified as the pathogen of an ongoing pandemic. This virus has spread to many countries in the world [6–9]. By May 31, 2020, more than 489 921 confirmed cases due to COVID-19 had been reported in Eastern Mediterranean [10], Italy is one of the most hit countries with more than 232 664 confirmed cases, which account for 47% of reported cases in Eastern Mediterranean. Although there is a trend of relief in Italy but the situation remains unstable. Control measures have been implemented in Italy aiming to contain the outbreak and the time-line of the changes of control strategy in Italy is shown in Fig. 1a.
