The term biophilia was originally coined by Harvard naturalist Edward O. Wilson and has come to be identified most with the architectural practice of incorporating nature into design, creating an atmosphere where inhabitants of urban dwellings and office spaces might, metaphorically at least, "get ourselves back to the garden."It's more specifically defined in terms of our innate human tendency to interact with other forms of life in nature. Courtyards, terraces, plazas dripping with greenery, and expansive windows with views of organically inspired landscaping have become the hallmark of 21st century buildings.
