Molecular Structure of Acrylate Copolymers Used for Toughening Starch Film

The toughening of acrylate copolymers on starch film was investigated for removing warp sizing film brittleness and rigidity. Acrylate copolymers used were prepared through radical copolymerization in ethanol. The film was evaluated in terms of breaking extension, tensile strength, abrasion resistance, and flex-fatigue resistance. Structural parameters of the copolymers were determined. Copolymer toughening of starch film strongly depended on structural parameters. Use of a-methyl-containing acrylates did not improve toughness. Incorporating longer chain alkyl esters into the copolymers could remove starch film defects through blending. Poly(butyl acrylate-co-acrylic acid) with a molar ratio of BA70/AA30 gave better film toughening. Preferred copolymer content used was 20% based on dry weight of the film.
