Introduction When the Apollo missions explored the lunar surface, the early astronauts encountered a battery of environmental conditions that challenged engineers of the US National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). The lunar regolith is composed of extremely abrasive and sharp basalt-based rocks, sand, and dust that has not been exposed to erosion like earth soils.~(1-6) The lunar environment also has no atmospheric protection from intense radiation.~(4,5) The Moon's surface is arid with a non-existent atmosphere detrimental to any material sensitive to moisture loss. Daily temperature swings of 360K are a challenge for any material (low 40K (-233°C), high 400K (127°C)). Traditional tire material, butadiene rubber, melts below the high temperature (T_m = 371K (98°C)) and cracks due to drastic loss of compliance at low temperatures.
