The US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) issued new guidance on lead and phthalate regulations-mostly good news for textile manufacturers, importers, and retailers. The Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act (CPSIA) initially required testing and certification of all children's items. In February, the CPSC officially recognized that "certain natural materials," including cotton and wool, "rarely, if ever, contain lead." Penalties will not be imposed on those making, importing, distributing, or selling children's products made of these materials, dyed or undyed textiles, non-metallic thread and trim, or other fabric products. Fines and recalls may still be imposed if a company knowingly distributes items in violation of the Act.
