Functional textile materials are on our television screens these days. Blue and white face masks have become familiar, thanks to the unfortunate swine flu outbreak. What does this scenario reveal? Textile materials are no longer just banal apparel products. They are required to have multifunctional attributes such as protection and performance. In other words, 21~(st) century textile materials should have value-added properties and applications across the entire supply chain.rnThe next phase of the textile industry is global- and performance-oriented. The textile industry in developed economies is adjusting to this shift. Even in developing economies such as China and India, the industry is not immune to the changes.
