Preparation, or pretreatment as it's sometimes called, is arguably the most important step in the fabric dyeing process. "The old adage is 'well-prepared is half-dyed'," notes Mary Ankeny, director of dyeing research for Cotton Incorporated. Erwin Redling, head of pretreatment technology for chemical supplier Huntsman, says that preparation can "dramatically impact dyeing. If you don't get pretreatment right, you will see bad dyeing or poor quality of the fabric," he says. "Bad preparation leads to faulty wet processing results," agrees Samuel C. Ugbolue, a researcher at the University of Massachusetts, Dartmouth. "It's a waste of time and money."
