Everybody loves denim. Almost everyone in the world owns at least one denim garment-at least 94% of consumers around the world-according to the Global Lifestyle Monitor, a global consumer attitude study conducted by Cotton Council International and Cotton Incorporated. How and why did we all fall so deeply in love? Denim began its career as the uniform of workers-miners, cowboys, carpenters, sailors, and others who valued the durable cotton fabric and sturdy construction of denim garments. Today, popular, high-fashion, denim garments can demand top dollar at retail. Jeans are the most prevalent denim garment-the flagship of the denim fleet-worn all over the world by rich and poor, young and old alike. "One of the amazing things about denim is that it's been around forever and is still growing in popularity," says Cotton Incorporated's director of finishing research, William Rearick.
