To the typical person on the street, plasma may seem as much a part of a magical fairy tale as Peter Pan's Tinkerbell. But in reality, plasma—a phase of matter distinct from solids, liquids, and normal gases—is an electrically neutral, highly ionized gas composed of ions, electrons, and neutral particles. A plasma field can be created and used to change the surface properties of objects passed through it. You may not believe in Tinkerbell, but plasma is a force to contend with in industries around the globe. Opening a potato chip package could well put you in contact with a material that has been passed through a plasma field to deposit a thin, but functional coating on it-the metalized plastic of the bag itself. The contention is that similar magic can be performed on textiles.
