There is a common assumption about the dangers of decabromodiphenyl ether (DECA).It is the purpose of this paper to present an alternate viewpoint relative to the safe use of this halogenated flame retardant (FR).Efforts are underway to eliminate brominated FRs due to the identification of some FRs as hazardous to human health. Two brominated FRs identified as hazardous are pentabromodiphenyl ether (penta)and octabromodiphenyl ether (octa). They are collectively known as polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs): however, there are other FRs,which can be labeled as PBDEs,that have not been proven hazardous.Because they fall in this category, they are often automatically perceived as being bad as well.
