The effect of UV radiation on the human skin is a topic of growing interest due mainly to the increase in the skin cancer rates in many countries. Many of the lightweight garments used in summer do not provide enough protection for persons who spend all day in the sun. This study compared the ultraviolet protection factor (UPF) of fabrics whose composition and structure are appropriate for summer garments. The effect of fiber type and porosity on UPF values was evaluated to develop a predictive mathematical model. Results showed a high correlation coefficient between UPF and fabric porosity when each fiber type was analyzed separately. UPF was influenced significantly by fiber type. Consequently, a predictive model could be developed for individual fiber types, but not for universal application.
