A numerical model having the capability of predicting heat transfer through thermally protective clothing exposed to intense heat was used to analyze the skin model and in the burn damage rate equation for predictions of clothing protective performance. The effects of initial temperature distribution in the multiple layers skin model and variation in thermal physical properties used in multiple skin layers on predicted second- and third-degree body burns are discussed, along with the comparison of predictions based on a single skin layer with constant properties. The different pre-expo-nential factor and activation energy in the burn damage rate equation were applied to examine the effect on second and third degree skin burns for different exposures.
