We have come a long way in the past 15 years in terms of visualizing product concepts. Merchandisers and salesmen used to sell product ideas from presentation boards consisting of color-copied artwork, hand-drawn fiat sketches rendered in color pencil and markers, and text for titles applied with Lectraset. A single presentation board could take two days or more to complete, and a designer had to compromise color choices based on whatever marker or color pencils were available. Due to the time it took to re-render artwork and sketches, it was difficult to make last-minute changes to a presentation board, therefore preventing what might be a great idea from ever making it to the starting gate.
