Compared with single-nozzle L-type and O-type dyeing machines, a dual-nozzle dyeing machine has better performance as determined by the liquor ratio, fabric dwell time, fabric speed, and other variables. The main reason for using an adaptive controller is that a process or its environment is changing continuously. To simplify the problem, it can be assumed that the process has constant but unknown parameters. From the user's point of view, it would be ideal to have an auto-tuning function in which the regulator can be tuned simply by pushing buttons (fabric types and base weight). Then the others could be estimated by the system controller. Parameter optimization using the adaptive controller leads to a cleaner production process, as well as money and labor-cost savings. Adaptive control can interact with adaptive signal processing, expert systems, and neural networks. Dyeing expert systems (developed by China Textile Institute) can also be used to auto- tune the controller. Dyeing expert systems wait for set-point changes or major disturbances, and then evaluate the performance of the closed-loop system. The controller parameters are then changed according to the built-in rules, which mimic the behavior of an experienced control engineer.
