Fate of Copper in Copperized Reactive Dyes During Activated Sludge Waste Treatment

Sorption of copper during biological waste treatment was assessed by calculating partition coefficients based on simultaneous measurement of both dye and total copper concentrations. Concentrations of dyes and total copper were measured by liquid chromatography and by inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrom-etry respectively. Results were obtained for 19 copperized reactive dyes using mixed liquor suspended solids from municipal waste treatment plants. The results show that reactive azo dyes have average partition (sorption) coefficients of about 6 x 10~2 L/kg and, on average, 47% of the total copper is removed from solution by sorption in four hours. In the case of formazan and phthalocyanine dyes, respectively, about 36% and 85% of the total copper was sorbed.
