Simulations are used widely in management teaching to provide a "real-world" perspective. My experience is that simulations are especially useful tools for teaching undergraduates, as most lack extensive professional experiences that provide important referents for MBA and other postgraduate courses. Yet, if my experience is typical, most management faculty approach the use of simulations in a relatively ad-hoc manner: Based on some intuition or other evidence, we decide a simulation is appropriate for a given course or population, and then "go shopping" for one.
