While LevitZacks CPAs was founded in 1964, the San Diego CPA firm really found its current identity — and a culture worthy of the No. 1 spot in the small-firm category of Accounting Today's Best Firms to Work For list — with a leadership change in 2001. Eighteen years ago, Theresa Drouillard took over as CEO and Victor Ramsauer as president, ushering in a second generation of firm management intent on pursuing a different course from the firm's previous regime. "Victor and I came in with a completely different attitude than the previous partners, who were more old school," Drouillard explained. "Generations change, [causing] fresh views, fresh ideas not just for the structure of the firm, but culture, how people get treated, the clients we like to attract. The firm was managed by the guys who started it in 1964, and by the time it was 2001, they were still operating it like 1964. We came in with fresh ideas, different ways to treat people, how people work, and how workflow gets managed."
