The Internal Revenue Service opened this year's tax filing season with the expectation of receiving more than 155 million tax returns. In the early weeks of the season, preparers reported that many taxpayers were particularly interested in (and sometimes confused by) how the tax reform law passed in December, the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, will affect them. (The short answer: Not so much this season, but potentially very much in the next one.) (See our cover story.) The service noted that it was getting blitzed with phone calls from taxpayers to the help desk that it has set up for tax pros, and asked tax pros to stop referring their clients there.
