摘要

A system outage took the Internal Revenue Service out of the game for a day or so early in February, but by and large the tax season seemed to be progressing better than most in recent memory. (See our cover story.) Along with the usual issues caused by late third-party reporting, and the new ones created by the Affordable Care Act, the top concern on many minds was ID theft and other forms of tax-related fraud. The IRS reported identifying and halting an automated attack on its e-filing PIN application in early February, and warned both taxpayers and tax pre-parers of a "dramatic jump" in phishing and malware schemes. It issued a special warning for tax preparers to verify their EFIN activity, and to protect their EFIN and ETIN numbers and passwords.
