Are you feeling a bit nervous about the start of this tax season? If you are, you're not alone. While the tax season likely won't be as dramatic as the disaster that was 2012, the new requirements under the Affordable Care Act, potential delays because of the late passage of the tax extenders, and fewer resources available within the IRS all have many preparers on edge as this tax season kicks off. "I don't think [tax season] is going to play out well because they [passed] the extenders at the very last minute, the IRS will have to revamp their system and it will push the filing season back," said Greg Smith, managing partner at Fishers, Ind.-based cfd Accounting, which serves around 2,000 clients across its three offices. "It will be a fairly complicated and difficult season," said Mark Luscombe, principal federal tax analyst for Wolters Kluwer, CCH. Fueling the concern is the fact that the IRS, which was already battling budget constraints, now faces the hefty responsibility of enforcing the ACA. "They don't have the funding that they used to. They've warned that, if you call, expect to wait," said Cindy Hockenberry, manager of the Tax Knowledge Center at the National Association of Tax Professionals.
