European Union countries charge a value-added tax on some products and services that U.S. companies often can recoup.rnThese include expenditures like meals, hotel rooms and car rentals while conducting business abroad.rnBut collecting the money isn't easy, and the process could take six months to a year or more.rnEach country charges different rates and has different deadlines, returns have to be filed in the local country's language and original receipts must be submitted-credit card bills or copies won't suffice.rn"A lot of companies were doing so well they didn't file for their refunds because they figured it was the cost of doing business," says Les Auer, president of MeridianVAT North America, which helps businesses recoup their money on a contingency basis. "A lot of companies we called years ago that kept saying, 'Call us back,' now they're interested."rnMeridianVAT-which is based in Dublin, Ireland, with U.S. headquarters in White Plains, N.Y.-processes more than 3 million invoices a year and recovers more than $2 billion for clients, according to Auer.
