摘要

I have been fortunate enough to write 16 books and all of them, except for four, were not written on a computer. In fact, my first one was written on an Olympia manual typewriter which had a red and black spool that had to be changed rather frequently. And if you wanted copies, you had to use carbon paper. This was even before carbon sets were invented. So, that was hardly a paperless office. But even to this day, if you ask many journalists, book authors, and others who do a lot of writing (and didn't grow up wired to a cell phone), they would pretty much tell you that they always liked to edit on paper. Very few would edit on the computer screen. That is all changing. Today, the paperless office is now considered to be a basic philosophy towards working with the minimal amount of paper and converting all forms of documentation to a digital form. Why? This is all driven by such motivators as productivity gain, cost savings, space saving, the need to share information, and reduced environmental impact.
