An increasing number of investment professionals are recommending a diverse and growing category of investments known as structured products to help individual investors manage the traditional risk/return tradeoff of the capital markets with greater flexibility and customization. While structured products could be described as complicated to some, sophisticated to others, or even financial alchemy to skeptics, this class of investments is becoming another arrow in the quiver of many financial planners. If implemented thoughtfully within diversified portfolios, structured products can improve not only the characteristics of investors' portfolios but also their peace of mind. And by thoughtfully, I mean with a thorough understanding of the inherent trade-offs and risks embedded in these products.
