We present a method for creating three-dimensional haptic shapesrnin mid-air using focused ultrasound. This approach applies the principlesrnof acoustic radiation force, whereby the non-linear effects ofrnsound produce forces on the skin which are strong enough to generaterntactile sensations. This mid-air haptic feedback eliminatesrnthe need for any attachment of actuators or contact with physicalrndevices. The user perceives a discernible haptic shape whenrnthe corresponding acoustic interference pattern is generated aboverna precisely controlled two-dimensional phased array of ultrasoundrntransducers. In this paper, we outline our algorithm for controllingrnthe volumetric distribution of the acoustic radiation force field inrnthe form of a three-dimensional shape. We demonstrate how werncreate this acoustic radiation force field and how we interact withrnit. We then describe our implementation of the system and providernevidence from both visual and technical evaluations of its ability tornrender different shapes. We conclude with a subjective user evaluationrnto examine users’ performance for different shapes.
