摘要

Providing library users with easy access to the full-text content of electronic resources is the goal of every librarian I know, and in these days of dwindling print resources, the reliance on electronic resources is even more pronounced. Librarians want to ensure easy access to the desired online con-tent with as few clicks as necessary ... hopefully in just one click. But is that really possible? Generally, there are several barriers that library users must overcome to search a library discovery layer and easily drill down to any online content. For example, in the typical scenario of a first-year higher education student looking for a popular magazine or academic journal article, they first need to know how to search the library's discovery layer. After finding an interesting item record, they need to know how to open it and possibly choose from several access points to get to the full-text article. Then they have to navigate to the landing page of the specific article and recognize that the content is available in a suitable format. At a minimum, this process can take three to four clicks. But, are our users successfully getting to the full-text article every time? Should we not be asking ourselves if there are ways we can help users easily recognize that the full-text article is available and minimize the number of clicks it takes to get to it?
