The digital divide in public libraries' acquisition of electronic resources in Iowa

For patrons and librarians in contemporary American society, electronic resources have become a routine part of library collections. Compared to traditional library collections such as physical copies of books, DVDs and CDs, multiple electronic resources, including eBooks, digital video and audio, are much more convenient for searching and retrieving. They provide patrons with better customer services and enable them to circulate library collections remotely. Considering the remote basis of electronic resources, their growth in the library space may provide equal access to patrons regardless of their residency in urban or rural areas. As a farm state, Iowa has a large population residing in small towns and rural areas. According to the report Iowa Public Library Statistics, July 1, 2017-June 30, 2018, 388 of public libraries in Iowa are in communities with populations lower than 2,500.' Public libraries located in a large number of small communities in the state enabled the author to examine whether residents are provided with equal access to electronic resources. With a focus on the possible impact of the size of communities on inequality in the distribution of the electronic resources among public libraries in the state of Iowa, the author contends that the digital divide constitutes a serious problem in libraries.
