The ERM Ideas and Innovations column for this issue is authored by Rick Davis, Copyright and Scholarly Communications Librarian, Albert S. Cook Library, at Towson University. Determining the right licensing terms is a critical component of the USMAI consortial governance framework discussed in the ERM Ideas and Innovations column published in September 2016. Rick led the working group that investigated required and preferred license terms for consortial e-resource subscriptions for the University System of Maryland & Affiliated Institutions (USMAI) member libraries. Their report was excellent, very thorough, and well received by the USMAI Council of Library Directors (CLD) earlier in 2016. The recommendations of the licensing terms working group report will itself help to frame the business processes and workflows to eventually update the USMAI license agreements with necessary terms as well as initiate opportunities for innovation or greater cost effectiveness in group licensing and improved group licensing management.
