Brian Nosek from the University of Virginia opened the second day of Association of College and Research Libraries' (ACRL's) Library Assessment Conference with a keynote speech about the Center for Open Science, a research lab that investigates the difference between scholarly values and scholarly practices. Academics attempting to conduct unbiased research still have assumptions, stereotypes, and prior experience that filter what comes in through their sensory systems. Perception is not subject to reason. We do not get to decide how we perceive the world: it just happens, mostly unconsciously on our part.
