Science fiction has many stories of entrepreneurs leading humanity into space. One common example is "The Man Who Sold the Moon" by Robert Heinlein. Published more recently, and perhaps a better novel, is Michael Flynn's "Firestar." These novels show charismatic visionaries committing their business skills and personal fortunes to get humanity moving into a frontier where their governments have proved too lethargic to do so. In "The Space Barons," a nonfiction chronicle of the founding of the largest new space businesses of the 21st century, Christian Davenport shows us that the novelists had it just about right. Davenport's job covering the space beat for The Washington Post has given him a front row seat for the actions of characters as bold and farsighted as those in any novel.
