On a hot July morning two generations ago, three men prepared for a journey to the Moon. Outside their spacecraft, a humid sea breeze blew in from the ocean and condensed along the flanks of their giant Saturn V rocket. Inside, the occupants were cocooned in a web of wires, hoses, and harnesses. The astronauts and the massive rocket power beneath them were the physical expression of a presidential directive to land humans on the Moon within the decade and return them safely to Earth-a clear and concise objective.
