In September 2016, amid great fanfare at the 67th annual International Astronautical Congress in Guadalajara, Mexico, SpaceX CEO Elon Musk described his plan to build a civilization on Mars. His plan involves developing a range of new technologies: enormous reusable rockets, gigantic carbon-fiber fuel tanks, ultra-powerful rocket engines, and spaceships capable of carrying 100 or more passengers at once to the planet, then returning to Earth repeatedly to pick up more.
