摘要

The middle of a president's first term is a time when U.S. voters and the media reflect on the performance of the president and his party, and assess how such performance should affect the mid-term congressional races. For civil space advocates, this raises questions such as: Has the president given the nation's space exploration and development efforts adequate attention? How well has he treated those efforts in his budget requests? What relevant decisions has he been personally involved in, and did he make choices beneficial to national space efforts? Were his actions motivated by long-term vision, near-term objectives, political expediency, or something else? In a previous article in Ad Astra ("The Presidential Politics of Space," September/October 2000), this author suggested that regardless of who won the 2000 presidential election, space advocates should not get their hopes up. Judging from the current administration's actions to date, this continues to be good advice for at least the next two years.
