摘要

In the target article I set out to critique a particular practice common in ALife and adaptive behavior, that of modeling invented animats. Many commentators agree with some aspects of the criticisms presented,rnbut nearly all object to the proposed solution, that is, to give up this practice and model real animals instead. This would be "clear-cutting" the forest of models and "we should not be forced to choose between animats and animals" (Barandiaran & Chemero). It is "overly restrictive" as the relationship "is not competitive but complementary" (Beer & Williams). We should exploit the "methodological jungle" as having a real target "inevitably limits and biases" the search for mechanisms (Hoffman & Pfeifer). "More speculative, less grounded models also have an important role to play" (Husbands). It is a "narrow perspective" (Ikegami). "A pluralistic approach serves science best" (Lind & Enquist). It would be "a shame if Webb's restricted view of what models are good for was to become universally accepted" (Noble & de Pinedo). It would be to "stop inventing, and start copying" (Rohde).
