Advances throughout the optical networking industry are occurring at a dizzying pace. In fact, the optical components market has far out-paced the processor achievements characterized by Moore's Law for the past three years in a row! Often pushing the limits of physics, innovators in optics hardware, now termed "hard-optics," have been creating faster lasers, higher-density filters, better amplifiers, and all-optical interconnect devices—innovations that increase the optical networks' raw bandwidth by leaps and bounds every year and which have caused considerable excitement in the financial community while they're at it.
