2009 marks the 200th anniversary of Darwin's birth. In his most famous work, On the Origin of Species, he posited the theory that the most successful species are those most capable of adapting to changes in their environment. Although the work would become famous as the basis of'the theory of evolution', the word evolution itself did not appear in the original publication of 1859 (it was added in the sixth edition in 1872).
