Ultrahigh-molecular-weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) has been used in medical sectors, such as in joint-replacement prostheses in reconstructive surgery, because of its high strength and stiffness, good fatigue and wear characteristics, and relatively easy processibility compared with metal and ceramic implants UHMWPE fibers with high strength are also a good candidate for use in bullet-proof vests, climbing/fishing apparatus, and bow strings. Accordingly, several fabrication methods for mechanically enhancing UHMWPE have been attempted: addition of fillers (e.g., carbon nanorubes, carbon fibers, and nano-particles), self-reinforcement with UHMWPE fibers, and cross-linking.
