Morphology Control of Nanotube Arrays

A prominent theme of nanotechnology is the exertion of ever-increasing control over the morphologies and characteristics of nanostructures, particularly when the materials are of technological relevance. With sufficient command over structure and organization, key shape-dependent applications emerge, and numerous examples in nanoelectronics, high-strength composites, photovoltaics and catalysis have been reported. In many instances, generally using template-driven assembly, both rodlike and tubular nanostructures are formed, and a host of intrinsic properties are found to vary strongly as the morphology shifts from rodlike to tubular. In particular, application-specific phenomena such as bone regrowth, photocatalysis, hydrogen sensing, solar energy conversion, and ion-selectivity within membranes are found to improve significantly when tubular structures are used.
