The attractive properties of organic semiconductors such as high photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY), broad emission spectra across the visible range, and ease of fabrication make them attractive gain media for lasers.However, these organic lasers have generally required other expensive lasers as the pumping source, increasing the size and the cost of the system. Electrically driven organic lasers have not yet been demonstrated because of the high lasing threshold, loss from electrical contacts and injected charges. Recently, however, progress has been made with indirect pumping by taking advantage of the high carrier mobilities of inorganic semiconductors to make a hybrid polymer laser pumped by an indium gallium nitride (InGaN) light-emitting diode (LED).
