Bionanocomposites as New Carriers for Influenza Vaccines

Bionanocomposites are hybrid materials resulting from the assembly of inorganic nanosized solids with biopolymers, which can provide the biocompatibility required to merge minerals and biological entities such as viral particles. A novel and interesting biomedical application emerging from this feature involves their use as adjuvants for vaccines, in which the bioactivity of the immobilized viruses is preserved. Avian or bird flu is caused by highly pathogenic strains of influenza viruses that jump from animals to humans and, as such, the development of an effective vaccine to protect against a possible pandemic is a matter of urgency. The use of adjuvants based on bionano-composite systems, as proposed here, could make a scarce vaccine suitable for global use with easy administration. The assembly of negatively charged polysaccharides (xanthan gum) and sepiolite, a natural microfibrous silicate, at the nanometer scale results in a novel biohybrid system that is able to associate efficiently to influenza-virus particles, giving very stable water dispersions suitable as intranasal or intramuscular flu vaccines.
