Materials scientists refer to the bottom-up approach when they construct functional materials via the following five steps: (ⅰ) planning and design of individual objects with desired functionalities; (ⅱ) preparation of these objects in the laboratory; (ⅲ) assembly of the individual objects into a functional unit via an appropriate process, e.g., a thin film to be integrated into a device; (ⅳ) characterization of the functional unit and the device; and finally, (v) a correlation between the device performance and the structure and properties of the individual objects has to be established. It is crucial that in all these steps the properties of the individual objects can be systematically tuned so that the performance of the devices can be optimized in a rational manner.
