Nanoporous membranes and nanostructured thin films are very important for sensing, catalysis, separation, and various other applications.'1"8' Besides sol-gel ceramic and cellular membranes, ordered nanoporous and nanostructured thin films of different materials have been made using templates. Incorporation of nanoparticles into the walls of porous membranes is directly relevant to various applications, as new functionality can be integrated into a porous membrane through the incorporation of nanomaterials. Supramolecular templates, which can form ordered structures through self-assembly or -organization, can be used for making nanostructured thin films.'3'4'9' For example, superparamagnetic y-Fe2O3 nanoparticles have been introduced into wall structures through the control of copolymer phase separation.'10' The separation of magnetically labeled materials based on size-exclusion principles has been proposed as a potential application for such nanostructures.
