There has been great interest recently in the development of a new generation of electronic and photonic devices based on π-conjugated polymers. These organic semiconductors, which exhibit tunable physical properties and are easily processed, have been explored to fabricate a wide variety of thin-film devices ranging from electronic and optoelectronic devices to mechanical actuators. Superlattice and heterogeneous structures of conducting polymers, in particular, are extremely interesting from the viewpoint of various electro-optical applications. For example, multilayered heterostruc-tures made up of conjugated polymers are being considered for use in photovoltaic energy-conversion systems due to the highly efficient charge separation at interfaces in the multilayer. To ultimately realize such devices, however, new techniques for manipulating these novel materials into large-area and layered thin films with precisely controlled thickness and molecular architecture are needed.
