The Gulf War followed by the seizure of Kuwait by-Iraqi forces on August 2,1990, validated the Total Force concept introduced in 1970s. On August 6， four days after Iraqi force occupied Kuwait the Air Force asked the ANG to volunteer to support the military buildup in the Persian Gulf region. These units are the C-5A equipped 105th Military Airlift Group, New York ANG, the 172nd Military Airlift Group, Mississippi ANG, who has C-141, and the air refueling groups with KC-135, which began forming tanker task forces at Bangor, Maine, Pease, New Hampshire, Phoenix, Arizona, and Forbes, Kansas to provide air refueling for the units deployed to the Persian Gulf.
